External Sport Credentials Program

Did you know that you may qualify to receive high school credit for being a competitive cheerleader?

The BCSC is proud to have partnered with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture & Sport and ViaSport to offer the opportunity for BC athletes to be receive high school credit for competing as athletes within the sport of Cheerleading.

What is the External Sport Credentials Program?

This program aims to provide opportunities for students in BC to earn elective credits towards high school graduation by successfully reaching a standard of sport excellence as an athlete, coach or official.

Am I eligible?

BCSC has worked with ViaSport and Sport Policy Consultants to create the minimum criteria.

 Athlete Level 1 UXSA 10 (4 credits)

  • U14 Team BC athletes who compete at a National Competition, such as Canadian Cheerleading Championships, run by the National Sport Organization (Cheer Canada)
  • U14 and U16 athletes who place first at Provincials on a Level 3/Median or higher team.

Athlete Level 2 UXSA 11 (4 credits)

  • U16 & U18 Team BC athletes who compete at a National Competition, such as Canadian Cheerleading Championships, run by the National Sport Organization

Athlete Level 3 UXSA 12 (4 credits)

  • U18 athletes who compete on an ICU Worlds Team level 5/Elite or higher (i.e. Team Canada Premier, or if chosen to represent Canada at Pan-Am or ICU Worlds)

How do I apply?

Students who intend to use the ESCP to earn credit towards graduation should remember the following:

  • External Sport Credentials are elective credits and cannot be used to substitute for required courses such as Physical Health and Education 10.
  • You must meet minimum standards as above.
  • A student cannot receive additional credits for duplicate participation within the same category. For example as a selected athlete who competed on a provincial team, a student earns credits for Athlete Level 3. Being selected and competing on another Athlete Level 3 team (in a different sport) does not earn additional credits, student can only receive credit for Athlete Levels 1, 2, and 3 once

How do I apply for high school credit?

To receive credit, you must submit an official letter from BCSC stating you meet the requirements, and submit that to your high school counselor.

How do I obtain an official letter from BCSC?

Please submit an application here.

How do I prepare?

To qualify for the credentials, you must have a training plan and a training diary that documents your training of at least 100 hours at level. (i.e. July 13th - Team BC training camp- 6 hours, or July 10th Level 5 practice - 2 hours). You may not use lower level training towards this training diary.

You must have the supervision of an at-level coach supervising your training, and BCSC will verify your hours.
